00640 Gardens of Santa Fe, Section FAB Join us as writer Anne Hillerman and photographer Don Strel talk about their newest book, Gardens of Santa Fe. This book explores beautiful gardens, both public and private throughout Santa Fe. Accompanying the descriptions and interviews with the gardeners are eye-catching photographs that give both an overview of the garden and highlight specific flowers and features. This book is a visual journey through some of the most spectacular and luminous gardens of Santa Fe. Santa Fe boasts an astonishing diversity of flora, from traditional succulents and drought-resistant plants to roses and fruit trees—all grown in the high-desert mountains. Gardens of Santa Fe captures the most memorable and diverse private gardens the city has to offer, as well as highlighting some of the more spectacular public gardens in the area. Anne Hillerman introduces readers not only to the gardens of Santa Fe but to the passionate people who find joy in tending those gardens. Don Strel’s breathtaking photos illuminate nearly every page as Anne Hillerman highlights specific flowers and provides insight into each garden and its caretaker.

The writers include Kevin Phillips, Andrew Bacevich, Newt Gingrich and Tony Judt. This lecture focuses on Kevin Phillips, who was an official of the Nixon White House and is now one of America’s foremost social historians who addressed American Theocracy: The Peril and Politics of Radical Religion, Oil, and Borrowed Money in the 21st century (2006). Lectures on the other three authors will be presented on Mondays, 10/11, 10/18, and 10/25 from 1 – 3 (see page 102 of the UNM Continuing Education Fall 2010 Catalog).

00643 The Archaeological Site of Los Ojitos, Section FAB The archaeological site of Los Ojitos on the Pecos River in Guadalupe County is an historic Hispanic village that existed from about 1868 until 1940, when the Sumner Lake Dam was constructed and the town was abandoned. The site has some very nice structures including standing walls of houses, rock corrals, stone dog or lambing pens, and remnants of roads. This is one of the most complete set of territorial period ruins along the Pecos. Come to enjoy the lecture, beautiful photos and maps.

00645 Nuclear Issues and New Mexico, Section FAB The story of the nuclear-military industrial complex and the generation of electrical power with nuclear energy is a fascinating journey that has strong ties to the state of New Mexico. New Mexico is home to the birth place of the nuclear weapon, the world’s premier nuclear weapons design facility, some of world’s largest uranium ore reserves and legacy mills-mines, a nuclear weapons transuranic waste disposal facility, and soon a uranium enrichment facility for fabrication of fuel for nuclear power reactors. What role will New Mexico play in the future of nuclear weapons and the generation of electricity with nuclear power? Our speaker will answer some of our questions as he touches on such issues as the history of the nuclear weapon and the Cold War, Los Alamos National Laboratory, clean up of the nuclear weapons complex, the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, generating electricity with nuclear energy, uranium mining in New Mexico, and the future of nuclear weapons – nuclear energy.
