Yoga for Weight Loss
06520 Yoga for Weight Loss, Section RAA
Is weight loss one of your goals for this year? As anyone who has ever worked at losing weight knows, the effort is as much in the mind as it is in the body. In this practice, the yoga poses support the body in weight loss and the mind’s attitude about the body. In Yoga for Weight Loss, offered through UNM Continuing Education, Gloria Drayer will lead you through yoga poses to help strengthen the body. You will learn the techniques of mindful eating and mediation to encourage love of the body and mind.

I highly recommend yoga to anybody struggling to lose weight!
As a former overweight person, I know what a valuable role Yoga can play helping in the battle. For me the most valuable part was helping me to relax and also breath properly while working out. (Exercising while I was so overweight was very tiring and I used to get myself very stressed before my workouts!) But it was all very worth it, I have achieved my ideal weight and I’m now a very contented person now, unlike before I lost the 68lbs!
I tried yoga for the first time several years ago. At the time I was starting to train for an Iromman Triathlon and was carrying more than a few extra pounds. Through plain ignorance I was not a big yoga fan but by the end of the first session I quickly realized what an amazing workout it is. I quickly not only lost the weight, but vastly improved my flexibility and overall level of fitness. Bottom line, a good yoga session feels fantastic and really does a body good.
I am a physical therapist and want to point out another benefit that doing yoga has. Many of my patients aren’t motivated to do other types of exercise because they have no energy or are too stiff.
Participating in a modified yoga routine for a heavy person will also provide stamina and flexibility to participate in other forms of physical activity as well.
Yoga is really a known stress buster, but it is also one of the most effective workouts for fighting stubborn fat stores, especially the ones that appear after 40 years old. The reason: Research has shown that yoga lowers stress levels hormones and increases insulin sensitivity–a signal for your body to lose food as fuel rather than store it as being fat
I have had nothing to do with yoga but I am sure it is a useful adjunct to any weight loss plan. If I may, I would like to suggest an easy way to lose weight that requires no effort. I have been studying weight loss for ten years and have made a remarkable discovery. Most people are aware that any food, drink or sauce that is made in a factory is loaded with additives but hardly anyone knows that these additives are dangerous to your health and are seen as toxins by your body. This means they cause disease and also cause weight gain. My simple weight loss plan is based on superb nutrition and nothing else. When you have that, your weight seemingly falls off by itself with no effort on your part. Never in the history of weight loss has there been such an easy and effortless way to shed weight. I invite you to my website for more information at htp://www.how-to-lose-pounds.org Thank you for allowing me to post here.
P.S. Please may I use that wonderful image of a lady in the classic yoga position for my website? I searched for hours looking for a decent picture and couldn’t find a thing. Please send an email with the word ‘yoga image’ in the subject line. Thank you so much, I would so appreciate that. Kind regards, Duncan. (You may delete this paragraph).
Yoga relieves stress. People under stress use food as comfort. They are also more likely to engage in unconscious eating. This prevents them from realizing how much food they really consume.
Yoga can relieve this anxiety whatever the cause. This practice has thousands of years of success to back up its claims. It makes for deeper breathing, bringing much needed oxygen to every part of the body. This allows the body to function more efficiently, and make weight loss goals easier to achieve.
I did some yoga last year and though I haven’t lost substantial weight, I did have more energy and I was much more motivated.
I have to admit I’ve never really thought of yoga as a weight loss tool. However, a well focused and stress free individual is less likely to comfort eat.
Yoga is a great stress reliever and I credit it with weight loss because you become far more attuned to hunger/full signals, especially if you combine this with staying properly hydrated throughout the day.
My wife goes to yoga class 3 times a week and not only does it help with keeping a healthy figure it also relives stress and stimulates more brain activity.
Great Post.
Yes, yoga absolutely works for weight loss and I suspect that it is for many reasons in addition to the exercise it provides. Since yoga is a stress reliever, and since chronic stress is a known contributor to obesity, it’s pretty reasonable to infer that at least part of yoga’s weight loss benefits are secondary to stress reduction. Anyway, it clearly works.
