Computer Training Provided to Navajo Nation by UNMCE & Fast Forward NM
UNM Continuing Education is helping Fast Forward New Mexico make a difference in Crownpoint, NM. Fast Forward New Mexico’s (FFNM) mission is to increase statewide broadband adoption and to promote computer literacy and Internet use in rural, Hispanic, and Native American populations in order to better prepare the state’s citizens to participate in economic development and educational opportunities. The initiative also reaches out to small businesses and entrepreneurs. UNM Continuing Education is helping FFNM achieve their mission by designing and developing some of the curriculum used in the courses they offer.
So far the classes have been a great success. Participants in FFNM’s free computer and Internet training classes travel from several locations outside the immediate Crownpoint area to take advantage of the “world of opportunities” introduced in the training. Bennie ‘Jayare’ Francisco, the lead instructor for FFNM classes in Crownpoint, has established a unique learning environment for the class participants. Francisco is fluent in both English and Navajo and provides Navajo translation in the classes, which seems to be more conducive to learning for some students who had previously taken classes at other educational institutions and found the pace to be too fast and intimidating.
Based on the popularity and success of these classes on the Navajo Nation, two more locations, Thoreau and Newcomb, have been added to the schedule. To view the Thoreau and Newcomb class schedules, visit the Training Locations and Dates web page.
